--- Log opened Sat Apr 07 00:00:30 2018 --- Day changed Sat Apr 07 2018 00:00 <+CheckYourSix> I know plenty of people who have gotten interviews right and left with multiple offers after using him 00:01 <+CheckYourSix> And really, you can tear any resume apart. There's no set standard. What one manager thinks is great will be the worst thing ever to the next manager 00:01 < BonKurei> I'm leaving my job in a few weeks, taking a break and looking for something starting in august 00:01 < vader-> ya i dunno, i might try that other company i was looking at 00:01 < BonKurei> It's never taken me more than a week from the time i make a resume to the time im hired 00:02 < vader-> what salary range are you looking in? 00:02 < vader-> i think that makes a diff as well 00:02 * sideup66 loves linux 00:02 < BonKurei> 90k+ 00:02 < sideup66> Make little appliances to do things in vms forever 00:02 < vader-> ya im trying for almost double that 00:03 < vader-> and remote 00:03 < vader-> :-) 00:03 < BonKurei> What is your current title, chief of cyber command? 00:04 < vader-> haha Chief of Everything 00:05 < BonKurei> When they ask why you raised your wage to 180k tell them, Pray I dont alter the deal any further 00:07 <+CheckYourSix> vader-: What type of job are you looking for specifically? 00:07 < vader-> Mostly Cloud Architecture... AWS/Azure, maybe even a focus in either Infrastructure or IAM 00:08 <+NinjaStyle> vader-: let me know when you are looking 00:08 < vader-> looking :-) 00:09 <+NinjaStyle> they took the cloud architect position down :/ 00:10 <+NinjaStyle> I can ask recruiting next time I see one of them 00:10 < vader-> ok cool, appreciate it 00:10 < vader-> i am going to be trying to get my Azure Cert in the next two months 00:10 <+NinjaStyle> where are you located 00:11 < vader-> Philly area 00:11 <+NinjaStyle> would you be interested in DC or Denver? 00:12 < vader-> like onsite? 00:13 <+NinjaStyle> possibly 00:13 < vader-> eh, that is alittle bit of a trip for me and i know the wife isn't into moving out of the area. she is set with her career... 00:14 <+NinjaStyle> we do have full remote positions, but there are a lot more in site 00:14 <+NinjaStyle> on* 00:14 < vader-> i don't mine like occasional travel and stuff 00:15 < BonKurei> What about interest in silicon valley? 00:18 < vader-> i also has a strong background in Office 365/G Suite migrations... 00:18 < vader-> have 00:19 <+NinjaStyle> we were hiring that like 2 months ago 00:19 <+NinjaStyle> I recommended rkeene for it 00:19 <+NinjaStyle> but his price tag + no willingness to relocate made them less interested 00:20 < smileyscout> i have a strong background in being the laptop bitch 00:21 <+CheckYourSix> I would relocate, but I don't have the skills necessary to fill your jobs 00:22 < smileyscout> i haz limited skillz in doing password resets and new laptop setups 00:22 <+NinjaStyle> CheckYourSix: keep looking and applying. who knows maybe they'll end up liking you 00:23 < smileyscout> im an overpaid helpdesk laptop monkey 00:23 <+CheckYourSix> NinjaStyle: Maybe. Gotta pick up some AWS certs and stuff first 00:24 < vader-> ya that is my next goal 00:24 < vader-> can't decide if I want to do Azure or AWS certs first 00:25 <+NinjaStyle> I would recommend aws 00:26 <+NinjaStyle> Slightly less people on azure, and Ms certs are hard in the shittiest way 00:27 <+NinjaStyle> I heard the Linux academy aws stuff is good 00:28 < smileyscout> certs are bad m'kay 00:30 <+CheckYourSix> I have to take a pre-calc class so I can get into the Computer Science degree 00:30 <+CheckYourSix> So dumb 00:30 <+CheckYourSix> I also need to file my taxes this weekend. How exciting 00:31 < BonKurei> Good math skills are pretty helpful for comp sci, you wont use too many of the skills later but logic and problem solving skills are integral to success 00:32 <+CheckYourSix> My logic and problem solving skills are already really good. I doubt the math is going to help them *that* much. I could pass the Calc I class, but they require a recent (last 3-5 years) pre-calc class in order to get into the program. Mine is over 10 years ago 00:32 < BonKurei> have a great weekend all! 00:32 < BonKurei> Checking out 00:33 < vader-> ive been toying with the idea of starting an MSP or starting a business just for moving people to "the cloud" 00:35 < czarbomba> so i read the "ip over carrier pigeon" article 00:35 < czarbomba> i'm never going to bitch about slow broadband again 00:47 <+MillerBOSS> B Dbl E Dbl R U N BEER RUN 00:48 < czarbomba> you should consider buying beer that can't run away 00:48 <+MillerBOSS> https://youtu.be/opCMW6xqS_U?t=30 00:48 <+layer-eight> YouTube Naughty Monkey Band Last Show - 38 - Beer Run by 2013-09-25T07:08:42.000Z (duration: 3:53) on Wed Sep 25 14:08:42 UTC 2013, 2013-09-25T07:08:42.000Z views 00:58 < vader-> Any of you guys web designers or work with designers? 00:59 <+CheckYourSix> Do you just have a question on it or are you looking for a designer? 01:00 < Holo> https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DaIA0ECVAAAB7S1.jpg:large 01:00 < Holo> tmobile... 01:00 < vader-> looking for a designer mainly 01:00 < vader-> specifically someome who works in wordpress 01:01 < sideup66> Holo: TMobile does that? MetroPCS Communications Inc. 01:06 < vavkamil> I was hacking T-Mobile DE and CZ, both have bug bountry programs, ton of vulns 01:07 < vavkamil> probably the worst program that I ever participated with 01:07 < vavkamil> they don't really care that much about security 01:12 < Demos> has PXE ever worked in the history of man? 01:13 <+CheckYourSix> Yeah... what's wrong with it? 01:13 < Demos> idk just not booting. looks like it gets a lease from my firewall tho 01:13 < Demos> it never downloads the efi binary from my tftp server though 01:14 < Demos> another mahcine on my network can download that just fine 01:14 < vader-> you setting all the DHCP stuff correctly? 01:14 < Demos> not sure. I guess I'll try locally instead of having pfsense send the bootfile 01:15 <+CheckYourSix> It's usually DHCP stuff that isn't set up right. I had that issue with pfSense when I tried PXE boot 01:17 <+MillerBOSS> https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/8a0jfh/autopilot_barrier_lust_201812/ 01:18 < sadbox> Demos: so, so many times 01:19 < czarbomba> pfsense dhcp seems to be rock solid but the esoterica of pxe might make it more convenient if you're a bsd guy 01:19 < czarbomba> or at least someone who used it regularly more recently than freebsd 5.0 01:20 < Demos> yeah I'll just use ISC 01:20 < czarbomba> or just hire felda :D 01:20 <@JollyRgrs> i have pfsense but use isc and bind9 01:24 < Demos> yeah I use bind9 for dns 01:24 < Demos> controlled by freeipa 01:26 <@JollyRgrs> i use bind9 controlled by.... me? 01:26 < Demos> well yeah, I just keep the data in ldap 01:27 < Demos> guess who had DHCPv6 blocked by their firewalld 01:27 <+CheckYourSix> Lol! 01:27 < pcspkr> lol firewalld 01:29 < Demos> ?? 01:29 < Demos> you got a problem with firewalld 01:29 < pcspkr> yeah it's a piece of shit 01:29 < czarbomba> s/firewalld/anything that isn't iptables 01:29 <+layer-eight> Demos meant: "you got a problem with anything that isn't iptables" 01:29 < pcspkr> yum install iptables-services 01:29 < pcspkr> systemctl mask firewalld 01:30 <+MillerBOSS> Yum install beer me 01:31 < czarbomba> still chasing after the beers that ran away? 01:32 < pcspkr> debeers 01:32 < Demos> nftables 01:32 < Demos> or the new bpf tables 01:33 < Demos> ugh finding the right client id for a static dhcpv6 assignment 01:33 <+MillerBOSS> Only chasing after you czarbomba 01:34 <+MillerBOSS> This is dumb https://twitter.com/troyhunt/status/982336047664185344 01:34 <+MillerBOSS> www is a subdomain 01:35 <+CheckYourSix> It is dumb 01:36 < Demos> doesn't chrome allow ftps 01:36 <+MillerBOSS> It allows me to give it quarters and I can play games 01:37 <+MillerBOSS> Plus I have never found a way to copy the URL from Chrome and only copy the domain and not the protocol:// 01:37 < zerocool> anyone here use elastalert? 01:39 <+MillerBOSS> Help help I have fallen and can't get up 01:39 <+MillerBOSS> That kind? 01:39 <+MillerBOSS> ha ha 01:39 < zerocool> help 01:41 < zerocool> ivfallen.mod 01:41 <+MillerBOSS> So Elasticsearch. What is a use case zerocool ? Learn me 01:42 < zerocool> well basically i have a million computers sending logs to elk stack server then i have elastalert running there which spams me with shit i "care" about 01:42 <+MillerBOSS> With or without a dashboard? 01:42 < xamithan> a million? 01:42 < zerocool> ummm... without? 01:43 < zerocool> it's just a daemon and configs 01:43 <+MillerBOSS> I am just trying to learn how you use it. :) So using Kibana for example may not be a good fit because of too much shit and you only want to be alerted of specific issues int he logs, correct? 01:44 < zerocool> was wondering if anyone else here used it because... i think this should be simple but maybe it's not i have googled and read all the docs and poked around but cannot get it to work... the body of the email displays UTC and i need to it display local time 01:44 < zerocool> i mean it would be nice 01:44 < zerocool> the ppl around here will think last night was this morning when reading the email 01:44 < zerocool> or visa versa 01:44 < onicrom> you dont live in utc? 01:45 < SysAdminGoneCraZ> See, this is why we all should UTC. 01:45 <+MillerBOSS> Oh I was curious how you use Elasticsearch, assuming you use logstash etc. :) Would that be a setting in elestalert? 01:45 <+MillerBOSS> Also I see they use Gitter 01:45 <+MillerBOSS> https://gitter.im/Yelp/elastalert 01:45 < zerocool> i use elk, elasticsearch logstach and kibana... and elastalert 01:46 < zerocool> and beats as shippers, 01:46 < zerocool> filebeat and winlogbeat 01:46 < zerocool> >stach 01:46 < zerocool> kek 01:46 <+MillerBOSS> Is that in a Linux only environment? Would something like that work well for a mix of Windows, Linux, network hardware, etc? 01:46 < zerocool> winlogbeat for workstations and servers 01:46 < zerocool> basically local service to ship windows logs 01:46 < SysAdminGoneCraZ> MillerBOSS: Looks like no one answers that IM. A whole bunch of questions though. 01:47 <+MillerBOSS> OK interesting 01:47 <+MillerBOSS> Oh yeah you are right SysAdminGoneCraZ 01:47 < SysAdminGoneCraZ> which sucks :\ 01:47 < zerocool> yeah, look into it for fun and profit it's dope 01:47 < zerocool> i will just continue to tell people it's UTC and l2utc 01:48 <+MillerBOSS> I suck at learning from scratch vs seeing something in action then building it from scratch. 01:48 <+MillerBOSS> Or in your case knowing "use these things" 01:49 <+MillerBOSS> Have you seen zerocool https://github.com/Yelp/elastalert/issues/861 01:50 <+MillerBOSS> https://github.com/Yelp/elastalert/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=timezone 01:51 < zerocool> yeah but... i was hoping it was fixd 01:51 < zerocool> like i wouldn't need to write my own modules 01:51 < zerocool> since it's been a year seems ez 01:51 < zerocool> seems like it should be a thing, even has some docs that suggest it's a think but i try adding directives and no working :/ 01:52 < Demos> weee got it booting 01:52 <+MillerBOSS> Do you have any how to sites that you followed for this whole set up or did you use vendor guides? 01:53 <+MillerBOSS> And should I be creating each application in the same OS or use docker containers? 01:53 <+MillerBOSS> Say for ELK 02:03 * czarbomba flings millerboss back down the quarry 02:04 < sideup66> hey room 02:05 < sideup66> so this is a fun one, just setup google voice on my phone to deal with some stupid work alerts that come through as email to sms, setup the funky sms relay...problem now is that when it does its fun little relay 02:05 < sideup66> it forwards the text to my real number 02:05 < sideup66> but marks gvoice as read, i could block the gvoice number which probably would fix that, but how would i leave the message unread in google voice 02:05 < sideup66> or mark it as such 02:06 <+MillerBOSS> Mark as read, are you sure? I forward all Google Voice SMS to AT&T and everything in Google Voice is unread as I never look at it 02:07 < sideup66> yes 02:08 < sideup66> when i look in google voice andsee the message in there, it appears as read, so no alert 02:08 < sideup66> which is weird 02:08 <+MillerBOSS> Do you want them forwarded to your carrier SMS? 02:08 < sideup66> and no, i cant setup forwarding through google itself as it asks me to confirm the google voice email address for reasons, and i cannot get the message on the other end with the code 02:08 < sideup66> no 02:08 < sideup66> i do not 02:08 < sideup66> i want them just in google voice (will do them through the app) 02:09 < sideup66> so forwarding will be done via a mail client on a vm 02:09 < sideup66> because of said gmail limitation 02:10 < sideup66> unless you wre able to make google do the forwarding somehow 02:10 <+MillerBOSS> OK to recap the thing we discussed last week, you only want the messages from jboss to go to email which ifttt or zappier sends to Google Voice via a rule to reply to your text.googlevoice.com address correct, and you want all Google Voice voicemails, calls, SMS etc to go to your carrier number but not the JBoss SMSes, correct? 02:13 <+MillerBOSS> Also you are doing this because boss said it needs to be SMS. Why not set up another Google account with another Google Voice account just for this and disable https://millerboss.com/x/Screen-Shot-2018-04-06-at-7.12.06-PM-4H.png sideup66 02:14 < sideup66> no, let me recap...I get the email alerts from systems at work as an email. Google voice does not have a direct email gateway unless you do the weird gmail thing. what i want to happen is these alerts hit google voice and alert me on my phone, messages dont come to my carrier number, just live in google voice 02:14 < sideup66> yes, i have that disabled 02:14 < czarbomba> sideup if you go to the actual google voice site you should be able to shut off sms forwarding. thing is, that means you need hangouts or a working GV app to get them on mobile 02:15 < sideup66> i do, i want to get them there 02:15 < sideup66> just keep them in voice 02:15 < czarbomba> i don't really remember if the option not to mark read is available in the GV interface. goog is moving away from there. 02:15 < ihre> voice: how about dem highlights 02:15 < Nightcinder> just got a phone call about our ERP system crashing 02:15 < sideup66> weird though, i was turning that off in the google voice android app and it was still sending them to my real phone 02:15 < czarbomba> hangouts being not fully baked, of course goog is going to start letting GV rot 02:15 < Nightcinder> turns out the dude walked away in the middle of closing a work order so all the tables were locked 02:15 < Nightcinder> sldk;hfjsklajdhfjaskdbfas 02:15 < czarbomba> but i use the voice.google.com web interface to do all that stuff and the android GV app still delivers 'em 02:16 < czarbomba> (for now) 02:16 < sideup66> ill try through the site 02:16 < sideup66> right czarbomba , for whatever cooky reason our corporate logic is "take away blackberries because they cost too much" and oh, btw go all byod 02:16 < sideup66> and blow the shit out of your phone with stupid shit depending what you do 02:16 <+MillerBOSS> I shared this above https://millerboss.com/x/Screen-Shot-2018-04-06-at-7.12.06-PM-4H.png 02:17 <+MillerBOSS> And look at new and old interface for all options. 02:17 <+MillerBOSS> The new hides shit 02:19 < czarbomba> they just haven't made GV fully integrate into hangouts, which seems untenble 02:19 < czarbomba> untenable 02:19 < czarbomba> or they're head-faking on GV and they're going to do something more robust with it. but that would be a useful thing and goog can't have that. 02:20 < czarbomba> i just use it til the inevitable emails "this useful service will be shut down in 90 days" 02:20 < sideup66> yep czarbomba i have a feeling they are killing it off 02:20 < czarbomba> then i figure out where to offload it 02:20 < sideup66> they have a paid service 02:21 < sideup66> rather make money there than control this imho, and this was the testbed for project fi imho 02:21 < sideup66> either way thats done MillerBOSS 02:21 < sideup66> and you said make another google account? 02:22 < sideup66> thing is i want the alerts on the phone, and weirdly, disabling the email bridge breaks the mail forwarding ability 02:23 < sideup66> czarbomba: though turning off that bridge makes no sense to me 02:23 < sideup66> why would they do that 02:23 < sideup66> to get people to buy a paid service? 02:24 < sideup66> MillerBOSS: wtf did you mean make a seperate account though 02:28 <+CheckYourSix> Hmmmm. Do I set up Foreman for automatic provisioning of VMs or do I use something else? 02:28 < starbomba> sergei skripal rapidly recovering now 02:28 * starbomba gets the popcorn 02:28 < sideup66> think i figured it out 02:29 < sideup66> when thunderbird is forwarding (in my test, i will be using mutt for it in real life) it is flagging the message as read 02:29 < sideup66> i think its carrying that attribute somehow lol 02:29 < starbomba> old korean president going to prison for 24 years. old brazilian president going to prison for 12 years. the menendez brothers are cellies now 02:29 < starbomba> WHAT THE FUCK IS EVEN GOING ON ANY MORE 02:30 <+CheckYourSix> Is anyone running containers on top of CentOS? 02:31 <+CheckYourSix> Seems like the majority of people run Docker on top of Ubuntu 02:33 < mkillebrew> does it matter? 02:33 < sideup66> ive been on the virtualization train now 02:34 < sideup66> home server has a fuckton of horsepower and have the base os for home server shit 02:34 < sideup66> anything i wanna add ontop just gets virtualized :D 02:40 < admiralspark> man 02:40 < admiralspark> Almost done with today 02:40 < coderphive> GUIS 02:40 < coderphive> it's friday 02:40 < coderphive> Also, I almost got killed by a fucking tornado twice 02:40 < admiralspark> that it is 02:41 < admiralspark> jesus 02:41 < coderphive> like, can Texas calm down? that'd be dope. 02:42 < starbomba> jesus, people still unironically blast EDM music? 02:42 < coderphive> yes 02:42 < starbomba> how sad for them 02:42 < coderphive> I do it on purpose all the time 02:42 < coderphive> fight me 02:42 * Church- coughs and turns off his 90's techno playlist 02:42 < coderphive> bro 02:43 < sideup66> unts unts unts unts unts 02:43 < admiralspark> bootsncatsnbootsncatsnbootsncatsnbootsncatsn 02:43 < coderphive> dun dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun 02:44 < coderphive> ssssssssssssshhhhhhpppppssssssssshhhhhhhhh 02:44 < sideup66> the system is down 02:44 < sideup66> the syste 02:44 < sideup66> m 02:44 < sideup66> is down 02:44 < coderphive> WAH WAH WAH WAH 02:44 < coderphive> TO THE CONTROL ROOM 02:45 < sideup66> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwZwkk7q25I 02:45 <+layer-eight> YouTube Strong Bad Email #45 - Techno by 2009-03-31T18:01:50.000Z (duration: 1:18) on Wed Apr 01 01:01:50 UTC 2009, 2009-03-31T18:01:50.000Z views 02:45 < admiralspark> here layer-eight 02:45 < admiralspark> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYRlTISvjww 02:45 <+layer-eight> YouTube Uptime Funk - (Uptown Funk parody) by 2015-11-05T17:32:04.000Z (duration: 4:29) on Fri Nov 06 00:32:04 UTC 2015, 2015-11-05T17:32:04.000Z views 02:47 <@JollyRgrs> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW0xk2ajRJE 02:47 <+layer-eight> YouTube Scary... the vpn subnet can't be the same as the actual subnet the firewall is interfacing 04:55 < sideup66> if anyone can answer, on a phone, if you are getting consistent texts from a service (like i do for work) isnt taht big battery drain 04:55 < sideup66> isnt that* 04:55 < The_Dv8or> how constant 04:55 < starbomba> i seem to have much bigger hits to battery than just incoming texts, which can be a lot 04:55 < sideup66> oh sometimes i can get em as often as every 15 mins if something is blowing up 04:55 < The_Dv8or> 30 msgs a second for 12 hours, it might be an issue 04:56 < The_Dv8or> one text every 15 fucking minutes is constant to the concern of battery drain for you? 04:56 < starbomba> if something blows up i get about half a dozen in the space of ten seconds 04:56 < The_Dv8or> are they 2MB PNGs? 04:56 < starbomba> and then sometimes i get shit every 10-30 minutes in perpetuity until condition is resolved 04:56 < The_Dv8or> do you know what a text message consists of? 04:56 < starbomba> SMS is nothing if not efficient 04:57 * The_Dv8or had to check to make sure there werent too many “s”es in consists when he typed it 04:58 < The_Dv8or> I think its time to set up another monitor… brb 04:58 < sideup66> starbomba: this 04:58 < sideup66> every 10-15 if something breaks 04:58 < sideup66> and this can go on 04:58 < sideup66> all day 04:59 < sideup66> until the resolution is there 04:59 < sideup66> hence why im wondering 05:00 < sideup66> starbomba: im honestly serious about that 05:01 < MikeSpears> the newer hpe aruba switches are sexy 05:01 < MikeSpears> https://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/5fUTAZV2/20180406_201454.jpg 05:02 < MikeSpears> https://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/ZQNkzxoA/20180406_201452.jpg 05:02 < starbomba> sideup66 i suspect if your drain is that bad when that level of SMS is incoming then a combination of your radio settings and your notification settings could be tweaked some. unless you just have a failing/old battery 05:03 < The_Dv8or> all right, external monitor is set up 05:03 < starbomba> but given my experience dealing with SMS notifications during outages, emails, etc., the text messages are basically insignificant hits on my battery compared to p much everything else 05:03 < The_Dv8or> now I cant wait to forget to switch my KVM over to that system its connected to and accidentally send my root password here 05:04 < The_Dv8or> were you joking, MikeSpears ? 05:05 < sideup66> hmm okay, just curious 05:05 < sideup66> im also doing this whole google voice nonsense because i want work seperated from personal essentially 05:05 < MikeSpears> not at all, they look way better than the older ones 05:05 < sideup66> only thing that im finding stupid is a. google needign to "verify" a forward email address 05:05 < The_Dv8or> old ones musta sucked the arse 05:05 < sideup66> so i cant do this natively in gmail 05:06 < sideup66> and the fact that once the email alert from our monitoring system hits voice after being forwarded it shows as a read message in gmail 05:06 < MikeSpears> nah, great switches, just ugly looking, and the webui sucked 05:06 < The_Dv8or> as not enterprise as they are, I fucking love Netgear blue 05:06 < sideup66> just a pain in the ass gvoice doesnt have an official email relay 05:06 < sideup66> and im forced to a hack 05:06 < sideup66> anyone know of a good voip service for free that has a mail relay 05:09 < AustinS> probably hard to find voip that does mail.. but Twilio is voIP that does apps/API/all that so you can do the mail side of it :p Twilio is great 05:09 < starbomba> sideup66 is unicorn-hunting 05:10 < sideup66> i mean 05:10 < sideup66> the thing is sent from email 05:10 < sideup66> so i could convince my boss for that one email to just email me it 05:10 < starbomba> you just want an email>sms gateway? 05:10 < sideup66> the rest come from an actual number 05:10 < starbomba> oh n/m 05:10 < sideup66> starbomba: honestly sure, if someone has a generic one that can shoot out the email from a number 05:10 < sideup66> and into my google voice :) 05:12 < starbomba> i would be highly surprised if you had much control over a free email>sms gateway's advertised number, but i expect it will deliver the messages to any SMS-capable number 05:12 < sideup66> dont care about controlling what number it comes from 05:12 < starbomba> don't be surprised if they append ads to your notifications 05:12 < sideup66> long as it sends the email to my gvoice as sms from an actual phone #, its fine 05:12 < sideup66> even if its a bastardized weird automated one 05:12 < starbomba> sms would require a return # iirc 05:13 < starbomba> as far as the standard goes 05:13 < sideup66> i mean 05:13 < starbomba> could you respond to it? who knows 05:13 < sideup66> dont matter to me 05:13 < sideup66> dont need to 05:13 < starbomba> but i expect if it truly uses SMS it will work fine with GV 05:13 < DrGibby|> NinjaStyle: I'm not sure 05:13 < sideup66> it would 05:13 < starbomba> i've never had an issue with GV receiving real SMS (or MMS for that matter) 05:13 < sideup66> so i can get rid of this bastardized hack im setting up 05:18 < sideup66> starbomba: im googling services now 05:21 < MikeSpears> network closet at my apartment https://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/Iy9hLnEB/20180406_232038.jpg 05:21 < MikeSpears> Still working on wiring (need longer cables) 05:21 < The_Dv8or> what kinda jagoff sysadmin has a personal printer these days? Somehow the HD Audio device drivers just disappeared. No devices. Says code 19 in the device description field. This is windows 10 64 bit. Windows update gives nothing. I do that and i just literally can run 07:25 < AustinS> send-twilio-sms.sh +1....... "my message here" 07:25 < AustinS> random super basic script that calls their API 07:25 < sideup66> this is an email i am getting 07:25 < sideup66> AustinS: how much does it run you 07:25 < AustinS> so something to parse the email and then call API? i guess it's hard to know what your use case is from just how you described it 07:26 < sideup66> i recieve an email from a packaged alert system at my job 07:26 < AustinS> the number is $1/month I think? and then texts are .. super minimal 07:26 < sideup66> as a text in my sms (verizon has a bridge for this) 07:26 < sideup66> prefer free honestly if i can... 07:26 < sideup66> although i get the cost is trivial 07:27 < sideup66> can twilio be setup with an email address 07:27 < AustinS> yeah I'd say good like finding a place that allows people to send out free SMS', since it'd just be riddled with abuse 07:27 < sideup66> and just send out via my number 07:27 < sideup66> ideally id want that 07:27 < sideup66> have no need for the api 07:27 < sideup66> as i can set the work system to just email that address 07:28 < AustinS> i don't think ... so.. I'm more just not understanding what you mean. Twilio is a phone services provider, numbers, SMS, MMS, SIP trunking.. email plays no part in that 07:28 < AustinS> you'd have to have something that received the email and just kicked off the call to Twilio's API to send a text. 07:29 < AustinS> emails not my favorite thing and I don't dabble in parsing incoming emails because i don't have a need to, but I'm sure there's something out there 07:29 < sideup66> yeah it seems paid ones to do this are super inexpensive 07:29 < AustinS> https://www.twilio.com/blog/2014/05/send-and-receive-sms-messages-via-email-with-twilio-and-sendgrid.html 07:29 < sideup66> for like 250,000 messages 07:29 < AustinS> old blog with examples of how to use a couple services to do that, found that on top result when just googling a simple sentence describing kinda what you wnated 07:29 < AustinS> may be useful, or give you an idea 07:29 < sideup66> twilio sends it out via a phone number right 07:29 < AustinS> brb/bbs 07:30 < sideup66> okay 07:30 < AustinS> yes, all texts have to be via phone #. the only reason the email works is its just Verizon masquerading it to their users, but youre at their mercy of not sending somethjing along if it's too big, they see it as spammy or its hit too frequently 07:30 < AustinS> i'd rather trust true SMS 07:31 < voidstar> TheTinker86, how are the freepbx escapades? 07:33 < sideup66> AustinS: yes i know, other services use real sms 07:34 < sideup66> sadly this one does not, though im going to talk to the devs, see if its a thing that can be done 07:35 < TheTinker86> hello my friends 07:35 < TheTinker86> hi voidstar 07:36 < TheTinker86> so the freepbx boxes are alive lol 07:36 < voidstar> better than the alternative 07:36 < TheTinker86> i think the main issue is ram 07:37 < TheTinker86> 2 of the 3 systems, that have issues often, only have 1gb ram. the other has 3gb. less issues 07:39 < sideup66> Actually AustinS I realized something 07:39 < sideup66> When that masquarade happens in the carriers relay all that is doing is changing header info, correct? 07:44 < voidstar> TheTinker86, yeah that seems quite a bit anemic 07:45 < sideup66> Actually my email system works if not for one caveat 07:45 < The_Dv8or> looks like DSLreports just took a dive 07:45 < sideup66> It does email the message into Google voice 07:45 < sideup66> But it doesn't flag the message in voice as new, so no alert 07:47 < voidstar> TheTinker86, https://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+dimensioning good read to determine your ballpark system requirements 07:51 < sideup66> Actually googling paid 07:51 < sideup66> Very inexpensive and plenty exist... 08:10 < DrGibby|> Hey as long as you don't store your clients passwords in cleartext... 08:10 < DrGibby|> And have "amazing security" 08:11 < AustinS> ogod, just finished building kernel, but it added "centos" in it smh. defeated the whole purpose of building it. starting overrr then maybe I get to leave 08:11 < AustinS> and haha @ tmobile, I saw that thread and thought it was a joke and then I was like .. oh :( 08:12 < voidstar> moar cores 08:12 < DrGibby|> https://twitter.com/ret2twit/status/982462726516637696?s=19 08:12 < AustinS> my CPU would power through it a lot faster iffff i wasn't building it in a VM, I'm sure :P 08:18 <+NinjaStyle> i was gonna buy snackoverflow.com but it is taken :( 08:19 < DrGibby|> Smackoverflow? 08:20 < voidstar> sufferunderflow ? 08:21 < catbeard> smackoverflow 08:21 < catbeard> slackoverflow 08:22 < catbeard> backpageoverflow 08:22 < catbeard> lol 08:24 < voidstar> ackstayoverfloway 08:25 < catbeard> atway 08:27 < TheTinker86> guys my internet at home r poopies 08:28 < TheTinker86> and i think my router and or modem is an issue 08:29 < TheTinker86> Cable modem + home router recomendations? I host my own media server that several people may use at once. aka needs a decent throughput for data 08:30 < voidstar> make sure you're running a docsis 3.0 modem. I'm running a pcengines apu2 with pfsense 08:31 < TheTinker86> what is docsis3? 08:31 < voidstar> usually you can open 192.168.100.1 to see your modem's status page 08:31 < TheTinker86> ive got my modem up 08:31 < TheTinker86> well my router 08:31 < zunk> TheTinker86: buy a dual gb nic computer and just use pfsense like any sane person 08:32 < voidstar> ^ 08:32 < TheTinker86> dual gb nic. i have a gig nic in my current server. whats pfsense? 08:32 < zunk> pfsense is a router ps 08:32 < zunk> os 08:32 < zunk> you need dual nic if you want to use it as a router 08:33 < TheTinker86> is it a full os or just software? 08:33 < voidstar> full os 08:33 < zunk> full os based on freebsd 08:33 < TheTinker86> why would i want to do that with a pc? why not just a router? 08:33 < zunk> its foss 08:33 < zunk> because a computer is a helluva lot stronger 08:33 < zunk> and you can customize it how you see fit, for the same money 08:34 < TheTinker86> for the same money? 08:34 < voidstar> there are appliances that are purpose built for pfsense 08:35 < voidstar> like the apu2c4 I have. all in it was ~$200 08:35 < voidstar> about the same price for the 'extreme' plastic routers 08:35 < voidstar> https://www.pcengines.ch/newshop.php?c=4 08:35 < voidstar> never had an issue 08:35 < voidstar> other than the learning curve 08:36 < voidstar> but I signed up for that one  08:36 < TheTinker86> learning curve isnt an issue 08:36 < TheTinker86> do i really need all that power for gaming and a media server? 08:38 < voidstar> maybe not, but I can't recommend any consumer router after using it 08:38 < voidstar> you could go the ddwrt/tomato/openwrt route with a consumer router 08:39 < benjgvps> A $60 Mikrotik hAP ac² will route up to a gigabit with dual band wifi for $60. Same OS as their $4000+ routers 08:39 < TheTinker86> who has a 4k router? 08:40 < voidstar> you'd be surprised 08:40 < TheTinker86> but does breaking a consumer router with ddwrt or open, does that really enhance the capabilities to that extreme? 08:41 < TheTinker86> like. i play games and my media server gets 2 or 3 things streaming from it at once 08:42 < benjgvps> I wouldn't bother with DDWRT with Mikrotik and Ubiquiti stuff being cheap as fuck. If you just want a regular consumer router that's easy to setup and works good enough, Asus makes some half decent routers 08:42 < voidstar> ^ 08:42 < TheTinker86> let me bring it back to the issues ive got 08:43 < TheTinker86> this router i have has been fine the last year. since i moved, and setup internet, ive had issues 08:43 < TheTinker86> i got rid of the comcast modem and got a basic netgear that could support up to a 300mbps internet. everything seemed fine, then winter happened and i noticed horrible lag during seemingly random times 08:44 < TheTinker86> comcast came a few times. eventually they realized the cable from the hub down the street to my house, was hella old 08:45 < TheTinker86> they replaced it 08:46 < TheTinker86> tech left his 'test modem' and i didnt notice issues that week. but i didnt play as much as usual 08:46 < TheTinker86> now that im back on my modem. i keep having random issues 08:47 < TheTinker86> no issues for days, then randomly i'll be stuck with high pings 08:48 < TheTinker86> i'll open a ping to google. it'll be 80ms. which isnt great but im not dying. then randomly every 5 or so is a 300 up to 1000ms 08:50 < voidstar> your modem is one listed here? http://mynewmodem.xfinity.com/ 08:51 < TheTinker86> i have a netgear one now 08:54 < AustinS> that much variety/inconsistency just sounds like something is just .. not good on Comcast's side 08:59 < TheTinker86> any modem recomendations? 08:59 < TheTinker86> for me to at least test this stuff out with 08:59 < TheTinker86> cus i cant say 100% that mine is 'good' 08:59 < AustinS> what modem do you have? not router, but modem 09:00 < AustinS> or is yours a all in one type deal 09:00 < TheTinker86> a netgear one from target. i could get the exact model if needed 09:00 < benjgvps> I like Arris, I'd recommend getting something with 24 downstream channels 09:00 < benjgvps> If possible, get a dumb one without wifi built in, then get a separate router 09:01 < AustinS> or pay the $5/mo to rent one from Comcast, see if it resolves any issue 09:01 < AustinS> vs. going and buying a modem (decent one will run you a good amount) 09:05 < TheTinker86> i dont mind spending money to make problems go away 09:06 < TheTinker86> and the issues started with a comcast modem 09:06 < benjgvps> He has a good point, most cable modems will be around $50-70. You could rent the modem for a month or two and bug comcast again. They won't be able to blame your modem at that point 09:10 < AustinS> maybe have a tech come out again after saying you're still having issues, tell them you'd like to rent a modem from them to try that as well and have them bring it with and install it 09:10 < AustinS> so they can see that it's still shit with their modem (or that fixes it) 09:10 < AustinS> but probably the first 09:13 < benjgvps> Man, I'm a dumbass. I was going to try getting this Icewarp email server migrated again since it failed last thursday. Unfortunately, I forgot to start the incremental copy earlier today so I would have to wait another 4 hours before I can start the actual migration tool 09:17 < benjgvps> Since it's 3AM, I'd need a lot more fucks to give to wait for this to finish. It's saturdays problem now, I guess... 09:18 < voidstar> incremental-copy && migration-tool 09:18 < voidstar> sleep in 09:18 < benjgvps> I wish 09:21 < benjgvps> I need to do some manual database exports, change a bunch of settings on both sides and blindly hope support's recommendation for last weeks failure will actually work. Who knew migrating from Windows Server 2003 to Linux wouldn't go 100% smoothly? 09:22 < voidstar> if it did go smoothly, many of us wouldn't have work 09:34 < Stoob> welp for those wondering i did replace the san controller and nothing bad has happened yet 09:34 < Stoob> #fuckitfriday 12:31 < Hempux> Wow Stoob so brave 12:31 < Hempux> Good day everyone 12:55 <+kbni> lel 14:06 < Giane> HI all i'm looking for a software/app/excel/something to store information about my server (ip,users, password) and the application running on it and the port used by this application 14:31 <+AnonymooseReddtr> morning all 16:06 < sideup66> So 16:06 < sideup66> This is making me rethink tmo https://gizmodo.com/did-t-mobile-really-just-admit-it-stores-customer-passw-1825058206/amp 16:08 < Holo> sideup66 sooo USA tmobile says they do not do that 16:09 < sideup66> Oh really 16:09 < sideup66> I have another friend who tells me TMobile is trying to sell itself but is shot down by the FCC 16:10 < Holo> ya they did 16:10 < Holo> AT&T almost acquired them 16:11 < Holo> tho now I think it was a well played play to get some more spectrum 16:11 < Holo> Tmobile came out better in the failure 16:11 < sideup66> So are they actively still trying to sell the company 16:11 <+CheckYourSix> That would make AT&T huge 16:12 < sideup66> Or are they going to stay, I see news about this but at the latest it stopped almost a year ago 16:12 < Holo> CheckYourSix sprint was crying 16:12 < sideup66> But this whole clearyext thing also terrifies me 16:12 < sideup66> And Sprint tried to be bought too 16:12 < Holo> ya 16:12 <+CheckYourSix> Sprint is junk anyway 16:12 < sideup66> Yeah 16:12 < sideup66> If they die nothing of value lost imho 16:13 < Holo> I hate it how its still fucking 2 GSM networks vs 2 CDMA networks 16:14 < sideup66> Yeah I'm trying to look outside Verizon, and like tmo but that little slip....come on 16:14 < Holo> if everyone gets forced to the simcard train 16:14 < Holo> prices will go down 16:14 < Holo> because the users can just keep their phones and switch 16:15 < m4221> Hey 16:16 < sideup66> I mean I do simcards as it stands 16:17 < sideup66> And this same person pointed out that yeah tmo bought a shit ton of towers but isn't maintaining thrm 16:17 < sideup66> Because they don't want the company 16:17 < Holo> tmobile has gotten better for me 16:17 < Holo> a new tower was added in my area 16:17 < Holo> or old tower 16:17 < Holo> lol 16:19 < sideup66> Yeah I know 16:19 < sideup66> Look at the coverage map, only people better/same are verizon 16:20 < sideup66> Which is my reason to not leave but they overcharge for it terribly 16:20 < sideup66> And I think the coverage is lapsing, it's a big, old network that needs a major overhail 16:20 < Holo> only real difference these days is that verizon has better freeway/interstate coverage 16:21 < Holo> sprint is overloaded as F 16:21 < Holo> tmobile is dirt cheap 16:21 < Holo> atnt is ? 16:21 <+CheckYourSix> Not really 16:21 <+CheckYourSix> They all cost the same now 16:21 < sideup66> It seems tmo has more value though 16:21 <+CheckYourSix> Tmobile $70/month for single line. Not cluttering my phone and b. Easy to tell gvoice to stfu 18:22 < catbeard> i just set DND until someone complains about me being on DND 18:22 < coderphive> Sounds like what you really need to do is concentrate on removing the noise from your monitoring 18:22 < catbeard> coderphive: also this 18:23 < catbeard> like down confirmation over 3 minutes instead of 1 with at least 3 confirmations 18:23 < sideup66> coderphive: that is something we are working on, big corp so it'll take time 18:23 < coderphive> sideup66 https://landing.google.com/sre/book/chapters/monitoring-distributed-systems.html 18:23 < coderphive> This gives some really good insights on monitoring in general 18:23 < catbeard> sideup66: we have a sensu/pingdom/hund integration 18:23 < sideup66> At work we have a service called splunj 18:23 < sideup66> Splunk* 18:24 < sideup66> That does all monitoring 18:24 < sideup66> It's like a giant ass db, reports are nice 18:24 < coderphive> Want some unsolicited advice? 18:24 < coderphive> or no 18:24 < sideup66> K why not 18:24 < coderphive> Splunk is not a monitoring system 18:25 < pcspkr> > asking if someone wants unsolicited advice 18:25 < coderphive> Their core competency is not monitoring anyway and they lack a lot of features 18:25 < coderphive> Using something like Prometheus will turn your monitoring game way up 18:26 < coderphive> Splunk is really good at ingesting logs and metrics and visualizing them 18:26 < catbeard> https://i.imgur.com/Fo4crgt.png 18:26 < catbeard> dis here 18:26 < coderphive> Sensu is great too 18:26 < pcspkr> lol sensu 18:27 < catbeard> we have it so that when we hide sensu alerts, it pauses the pingdom check and suppresses further slack alerts 18:27 < coderphive> If you can code that is 18:27 < coderphive> If you can't you probably hate it 18:27 < pcspkr> running fucking ruby scripts every minute or so is a joke 18:27 < coderphive> pcspkr what do you think most monitoring agents are doing? 18:28 < catbeard> it's quite nice 18:28 < catbeard> when you have HP alerts coming into 1 slack room, and inline acknowledge/resolve 18:28 < coderphive> Actually not most, all 18:29 < catbeard> also if it fixes itself, sensu resolves the check in slack 18:29 < coderphive> Yeap. Prom and Sensu are really great products. 18:29 < sideup66> coderphive: we actually are big enough to have in house splunk devs 18:30 < catbeard> there's like 20 'hey im apache i just restarted with SIGHUP' a day tho 18:30 < sideup66> So things we need Al la carte they do 18:30 < catbeard> may need to extend the checks a little longer 18:30 < coderphive> sideup66 That doesn't really matter. Anyone can code on splunk. 18:32 < coderphive> My comments on Splunk have more to do with the fact that Splunks system for alerting at scale is not comparable to a system like Sensu or Prometheus 18:32 < catbeard> iunno we monitor like 2500+ servers 18:32 < catbeard> very few probs 18:33 < coderphive> Splunks alerting system is clunky af 18:33 < coderphive> I only say all that because a previous employer forced me to use it 18:33 < catbeard> Stay back man! You forced me to use this! (picks up toothbrush) 18:33 < coderphive> Splunk is great, but they should stick to their core competencies rather than leading people down their frail features 18:33 < coderphive> kek 18:34 < sideup66> Being a huge ass bank (don't wanna name drop because I don't want work trouble, hope everyone understands that), they aren't going to do that because I bitch 18:35 < coderphive> ah, yeah 18:35 < coderphive> Big Enterprises are usually who let Splunk talk them into that kind of crap 18:37 < catbeard> heh banks will do anything to not spend $$ 18:37 < catbeard> at least credit unions lol 18:37 < m4221> Welcome to Panera Bread! Try our new Customer Data Special! 18:39 < m4221> sideup66: do you have as/400s? 18:42 < coderphive> Jesus man, I fucking hate dealing with country people 18:43 < m4221> coderphive: That that puter 18:43 < catbeard> what you mean by that 18:43 < m4221> That thar* 18:43 < catbeard> i'm a country people, i just have no accent 18:43 < coderphive> I unfortunately bought my car from a dealership a little outside Dallas and I'm scheduling to bring it in for maintenance 18:43 < sideup66> A what 18:43 < catbeard> my god man 18:44 < catbeard> hope you pass the emissions test 18:44 < coderphive> This woman is so old and country that she can't understand why I'd want to know if this is covered under the maintenance package I got 18:44 < coderphive> "Well Whhhhhyyy'd you'd want to know that siiiiiiir" 18:45 < coderphive> Bitch because it's supposed to be covered and I'm not driving down there to find out you you're pulling some surprise bullshit on me 18:45 < coderphive> /rant 18:45 < coderphive> I'll probably call Ford and have them move my service contract to an inner city dealership 18:46 < m4221> coderphive: whatchu want wit dat? 18:46 < coderphive> kek 18:47 < coderphive> Texas' country people are slowly starting to disappear but they're not gone from everything yet 18:49 < m4221> coderphive: what in tarnation is that? 18:49 < coderphive> thankfully nobody uses the word tarnation, I'd probably die 18:49 < coderphive> like on site 18:57 < starbomba> coderphive does that women add an unnecessary "r" to everything 18:58 < starbomba> for instance, does she pronounce "warsh" like "harsh" 18:58 < coderphive> god yes 18:58 < coderphive> There's all kinds of random sounds in her English 18:58 < starbomba> if i were a linguist i'd probably hang out all the time in texas 19:00 <+CheckYourSix> Jesus fucking christ FedEx. They couldn't manage a saturday delivery if their life depended on it 19:00 <+CheckYourSix> Never even came to my house. Just tagged it "customer not available or business closed" and left no door tag or anything because they NEVER. FUCKING. CAME. Now I have to drive to the location 19:03 < starbomba> that happened to me with USPS 19:04 < starbomba> i think some of their drivers consider weekend service optional 19:04 * m4221 tases starbomba for demanding service 19:07 <+CheckYourSix> This happens all the time with FedEx 19:07 * m4221 tases CheckYourSix for getting violent 19:07 <+CheckYourSix> I wish I could be that worthless at my job and not get fired 19:07 * starbomba flings m4221 back down the quarry 19:08 * m4221 slaps starbomba with a trout 19:08 < starbomba> your trout is too tiny to reach me from a quarry 19:08 < starbomba> senor tiny trout 19:08 < m4221> She said different last night 19:08 < starbomba> that was just to save your feeligns 19:10 * m4221 tases starbomba 19:43 < m4221> coderphive: where were you??? 19:44 < coderphive> My laptop powers down when I walk away 19:45 < m4221> coderphive: you are useless still 19:45 < m4221> Jk 19:45 < coderphive> kek 20:01 < starbomba> m4221 is feeling single lady saucy today 20:23 < starbomba> anyone here taking selfies with a porn star 20:24 * m4221 reports starbomba to HR for harassment 20:26 * starbomba locks m4221 in a porta-potty 20:30 < SleePy> I'm starting to hate Edge Routers... Difficult to configure advanced setups 20:30 < m4221> SleePy: stfu 20:31 < SleePy> How are you today? 20:31 < m4221> SleePy: betrayed--by you 20:31 < onicrom> does anyone know if rsyslog will restart a tcp connection should the underlying socket be silently killed ? 20:31 < SleePy> Thats nice 20:32 < m4221> SleePy: you hate edge? :P 20:32 < SleePy> Both the browser and the router 20:33 < L3gacy> good bacon to all and to all some good bacon! 20:34 < SleePy> I've spent hours in my home lab getting it setup to route traffic properly on a lan loop. Port 80 works fine external to my wan ip that maps into a local server. Lan devices can hit it. I finally got it to at least translate it to the lan ip and send traffic there, local server tcpdump shows it receive tcp packets and send some back. I don't get any back. Router doesn't show it and my other local device d 20:34 < SleePy> oesn't get it. Direct communication works fine 20:34 < SleePy> Shoulda bought myself a pfsense router for my home lab and been done with it :) 20:34 * m4221 kicks SleePy 20:37 < SleePy> Only way I can get it working is to setup a snat. But the forces masq on my lan ips. 20:48 < starbomba> rich guys playing spades. don't see that every day 20:50 < m4221> starbomba: SleePy said pfsense! Run far away. It's the most miserable job and you will regret it very much. Yes, you can make money, but you will hate everybody and never want to deal with clients again. I'd work helldesk with end users for an eternity before I ever went back to web dev for clients. 23:35 < voidstar> I had a web dev gig in HS and it was pretty much what you described. I though I'd give it a rethink since it's been some time. yeah, I'll keep declining the requests 23:35 < voidstar> s/though/thought 23:35 <+layer-eight> voidstar meant: "I had a web dev gig in HS and it was pretty much what you described. I keep asking for months, then give up and work on other projects. Client emails "I WANT MY FUCKING WEBSITE ONLINE BY TOMORROW OR I'M GOING ELSEWHERE AND I NEED A REFUND" 23:38 <+CheckYourSix> It happened a lot 23:39 <+CheckYourSix> I'd be like "I've been asking for 6 months.
